A Ride with Nige

Nigel (Nige) Wiggett, proprietor of Bridge Bike Hire in Wadebridge, regularly rides along the Camel Trail and writes about what he sees and hears around him. His personal report, supported by many stunning photographs, provides a colourful window into life and conditions along the Trail.

4th June 2008

Well that is a first - such a wonderful morning I have been able to bring the computer down and sit harbourside with a full tide and the sun shimmering off the surface to write the June report - I do wish though the Chough Bakery would not start so early, the sights and sounds of early morning boat movements is one thing the smell of freshly baked bread and Pasties in the ovens is just not fair.

Wadebridge early: the smell of freshly baked bread and Pasties in the ovens is just not fair!

The Trail both ways is surprisingly dry.

A beautiful June!

I digress - the Trail both ways is surprisingly dry with the only exceptions being some sections upriver in the Shell and East Woods areas and also down by the Vineyard where there are puddles and it is a little sticky. Given our pre Royal Cornwall Show weather forecast though things are looking good - Flaming June - I do hope so. I was up riding round Colliford Lake yesterday in amongst the Skylarks and the Buzzards and then dropped down to the Camel Trail via Blisland - this of course is another aspect of the Camel Trail which unlocks areas that would have previously been unsafe to negotiate by bike pre Trail days, so when I have a rush of blood Bude - Lostwithiel etc are now on my ride menu [ the fact that I have a few hundred miles of cycling to do in France at the end of June may also be a reason].

I talk about the changing face of the Camel Trail on a regular basis one of my favourite spots right now is the last cutting before the Quarry - this is where the greatest concentration of wild Honeysuckle and Foxglove are the early morning scent is just very special and with the Trail opening out for the first glimpse of Padstow with the Quarry covered in the purple of the Valerian it is a sight not to miss.

I said I would confirm that the works going on at the Padstow end was a new bike park this is indeed so - it would have come on stream quicker had it not been for a nest of blackbirds [don't you just love the Brits sometimes - I do - laid off the whole gang and rightly so].

Finally a fisherman Buddy of mine showed me Otter Tracks both sides of the river just below the main Wadebridge Bridge - I shall watch this area with greater vigilance in future. In the meantime I do hope you are able to make time for the sights and sounds of the Camel trail in June.. or July.. it is very special.

Safe cycling - Nigel
