A Ride with Nige

His personal report, supported by many stunning photographs, provides a colourful window into life and conditions along the Trail.

Report: 8th May, 2010

4.30 am Awake to full on Dawn Chorus.
5.00 am Dawn breaks on what is a very dull cold but still day - dress like a Michelin Man [ that comment will show my age ].
5.20 am Make coffee pull my bike out of the Store and get going downstream.

Taking at break at the Quarry.

5.45 am Stop at the Quarry and write a few notes - look back and there is a vivid streak of red across the Horizon as the Sun comes up - typical I have left not just my camera back at base but also my phone - obviously out of routine after a long weekend attending a Wedding upcountry of one of the youngsters that used to work for me.

6.00 am Make a few more notes at Pentreath Point, first cup of coffee goes down a treat looking across to Padstow on an outgoing tide - the breeze is just starting to hit my back exceptionally cold for the time of the year - we even had a ground frost warning last night - this is May - yes?

6.20 am Get moving down into Padstow - The trail of course is dry both ways - I know I wax lyrical about the Camel Trail at the best of times but this is a truly spectacular time of the year, we are going from Yellow and white backdrop to a pink phase - Campion / Valerian / Foxgloves with just a break about 100 metres up from the Bird Hide and you will smell it before you see it an overhanging Lilac Tree out in full bloom.

Having said all that about downstream - there really is only one place to be at the moment and that is up river complete with a carpet of Wild Garlic and Gaff and Undertown Woods bedecked in Bluebells - the sounds of Deer rutting in the woodlands - Sea trout and Salmon making their way upstream. Tell me this is not the very best place to be. It looks like another relatively dry week - can we have it a little warmer though please.
