However long their stay, writers from all walks of life have found inspiration in the beauty and history of this unique place.

The centre features exhibitions on a number of authors as well as a 15 minute video. A range of quality merchandise is also available.

Daphne du Maurier.

By far the most famous local author is Daphne du Maurier, who was heavily influenced by the beauty and history of Fowey and the surrounding countryside. Much of the Literary Centre is dedicated to her life and work.

As well as the exhibition on Daphne du Maurier, the Centre features the work of three other authors with strong Fowey connections.

Sir Arthur Quiller Couch.

Known as 'Q', a great literary figure who lived in Fowey and wrote fondly of the inhabitants of the town he called his 'Troy'.

Kenneth Grahame.

A great friend of Q's' who often came to stay in Fowey for holidays. It is said his boat trips along the River Fowey influenced his most famous book, 'The Wind in the Willows'.

Leo Walmsley.

A Yorkshire-man who settled in Fowey. His books focused heavily on his childhood home of Robin Hood's Bay, as well as his escape to Cornwall and his life living in an old army hut, off Pont Creek.

Programme of talks on the literary heritage.

As well as the exhibition and video, guides give talks on the literary heritage of the area, focusing on the four authors featured in the exhibitions.

The talks occur at 2.00 p.m. on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the holiday season and last about an hour. Talks can be arranged for groups at other times, including evenings, if desired. A small charge applies. Places bookable in advance by telephoning.

Their list of titles encompasses both works dealing with ancient sites of Cornwall and Devon and the remarkable pagan traditions and beliefs which thrived in this area right into the 20th Century.

Many of their titles are reprints of works from the last century, produced by a number of scholars who collected stories, traditions and customs at first hand. They believe that these pioneering works should be given another airing.
